My MamaCorn apprentice path as part of my midwifery path
One of my Corn dreams a reality now, in the piece of Land we are guardians of with my family, our chacra planted with Mama Sara, Mama Corn some weeks ago and thriving now, blessing our home. My love-story with Mama Corn, Mama Sara as we call her in our Peruvian Andes, dates from many many years ago, before becoming a mother. One of my daughter’s name is in honor to Her, one of her Medicine Allies, accompanying her since conception, and following with her her Life Cycle, until our baby girl was born into Pachamama with the Corn harvest.
Yesterday, Sr Juan prepared the ground for the traditional ‘aporque’ this Friday to further fertilize MamaSara with cuy & cow poop collected by my husband this dawn. With our same community friend, Sr Juan, gardener & Plant-keeper medicine man (and one of my plant maestros), we planted together in family this chacra in mid-September (see early pics).
In the recent “Wachakuy: Sacred Birth Way” Birthkeeper Program in August, my Din茅 (Navajo) sister & birthkeeper/ midwife-student Desi (the last time we saw in person was when pregnant with my first son 10 years ago) shared that a traditional Native American indigenous midwife had shared with her that if she wanted to become a midwife she had to plant and grow Corn and that She would teach her everything that she needed to know about midwifery 馃挀
So I’m walking that Path as well .. without knowing until my sister shared with me, that it is part of my midwifery path as well 馃檹馃尳
Deadline to register to the 17th “Wachakuy: Sacred Birth Way” Birthkeeper Program (January 2025): October 17th

An update on my holistic/autonomous midwifery studies
In 2019 I started a Holistic Midwifery education program (semi-distance) from Ancient Art Midiwfery Institute (AAMI, US) in order to have more tools and midwifery knowledge (including the clinical aspect) for Hampi Warmi's on-going dream of revitalizing Andean community midwifery - with support from the woman-centered & autonomous Wise Woman midwifery model of care. This may be the missing piece to having more chances on the sustainability of community midwifery in the Andes (including homebirth) and the cultural continuation of Andean midwifery.
In gratitude to the donations that I received from friends and family on my 36th birthday in order to acccomplish these midwifery education dream (to complement my learning with precious Andean midwives during my young anthropologist years), and to the partial scholarship provided by AAMI, based on my active community work with Andean women throughout all these 15 years so far.

Upcoming 2020 Collaborative work with Centro de Salud de Pisac (Pisac public health center)
Donation by Hampi Warmi to the public health center of Pisaq (Cusco) of:
- 10 reusable steel clamps
- 2 pinards (thank you MIDIRS UK) and
- 1 retractable midwifery tape measure
Looking forward to collaborating with this health center in the months to come with Lucila Kampmann (Denmark) as volunteering midwife in the trainings to the obstetric personnel, Andean pregnant women, and hopefully births we will support at
Pinard Donation 2019-2020 Donaci贸n de pinares a obstetras peruanas y estudiantes internacionales: un arte casi perdido de la parter铆a
To recall an almost lost midwifery art of listening to babies in-womb with the aid of a pinard (or stethoscope) instead of technology (Dopplers), MIDIRS UK (Midwifery Digest) donated to Hampi Warmi Peru aluminium-light pinards - to be donated in turn to our midwifery/ doula students on the "Wachakuy: Sacred Birth Way" birth training program to birth students, doulas, midwives and doctors.
We have also donated this last year and the present year to Peruvian obstetras and midwife-doctors working either independently (homebirth) in Lima and obstetras in the Cusco area working in public health centers. Given with the intention that this important midwifery art of listening to baby's heart beat without the aid of technology-waves is not lost and preventing the potential (not so-well studied) side-effects of its routine use for babies-in womb well-being (see Sarah Buckley, "Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering" for the warning on this). This type of auscultation is also more culturally-appropriate for Andean mothers during public health center pre-natals, than the wooshing sound of Dopplers on their bellies. So that they too feel more relaxed during their pre-natal care, and in turn their babies-in-womb.
Happy pinard listen-in!

Hampi Warmi initiative Update
Hampi Warmi is a Peruvian-based non-profit aimed to bring Woman Medicine and autonomy back to women worldwide throughout all the Cycles of Life. The main project, KillaWarmi, is a reproductive health intercultural project designed to empower Andean women and girls through woman-centered & evidence-based knowledge, the revitalization of Andean traditional midwifery, and the Remembering of Andean feminine wisdom and spirituality. HW has also worked promoting the midwifery model of care with cultural sensitivity in rural public health centers. Currently HW is focused on registering Andean midwifery practices in the Sacred Valley, and providing a thorough intercultural training program to midwives, doulas and birth workers & students around the consciousness of birth, pregnancy, and postpartum, including with-woman practices, rooted on Andean feminine teachings around birth. (see "Wachakuy: Sacred Birth Way" training program, Cusco, Peru)
Hampi Warmi Wasi
The highest dream of Hampi Warmi since its origins back in 2008 through KillaWarmi project has been of having a community-based
midwifery home/ woman’s medicine center. In 2014 we built a women's community center in Ancash for the women themselves to administer it, but many conflicts arose between them and we had the learned lesson of the importance of having a center for Hampi Warmi on its own for the continuity of our focused work & vision, and as a reference for replication. Been now settled back in the Andean Mountains of Cusco, in the Sacred Valley, this dream seems more close to been manifested, as well as different key people coming into place to co-create and develop further this long-time vision: that of having a physical space in Andean land which can serve as a home for protecting and serving Woman Medicine.
This isn't reduced to physical "medicine", but to the whole sense and cultivation of well-being in one's life and community-life that we in the Andes understand as true Medicine. Hampi Warmi has focused on girls and women and their empowerment for all these last 10 years. This doesn't mean that this center won't include the wellness too of their children and families, but that we keep women at the center. Thus the name of the center, Hampi Warmi Wasi, House/ Home of Woman Medicine. This will serve primarily as a safe space where especially rural community women can gather, for educational purposes, for sisterhood, ceremony and ritual, to revitalize Andean female medicine wisdom (including herbal knowledge), and to Remember together our strength and Medicine as women.
The first thing to be implemented in this space will be a WiseWoman library (we already have many of the books!). All of Hampi Warmi's workshops and programs will be shared in this center/ home - around menstrual/ pregnancy, birth & postpartum/ menopause consciousness, attending as we have all the female reproductive life cycle. The doors will be open as an advisory/ consultation space for reproductive & sexual health, and gender issues, including gender-based violence.
In alignment with Mamantin's program (see Mamantin post), the mid-term vision is that this center will amplify itself to include a midwifery home space, for midwifery care, births included, and "Healthy Woman" medical care in general. The care provided will be based in the midwifery model of care and have a clear intercultural approach, braiding this model with safe Andean birth practices & techniques and herbal support when needed. The participation of Andean midwives is part of this prayer. The vision is that this midwifery home space will serve too as a local intercultural midwifery training center for community aspiring midwives.
A Moon Temple will be "planted" next to the center.
This initiative is to be developed in the years to come in the Sacred Valley in Cusco, led by Hampi Warmi and its partners. But it is clear in this time that the steps towards this have to start now. So now the first step is finding and getting the land for this community dream in order to start planting the seeds.

World Breastfeeding Week 2016: Hampi Warmi's Statement
Celebrating all mothers in their own paths around breastfeeding and nurturing their babies on this "World Breastfeeding Week" .. And celebrating especially those who have challenges around breastfeeding, but who still keep trying in their search to provide the best from themselves to their babies, despite little sleep, little rest (even less when it's not that easy) .. I can just be at awe at the acts of love that we as women are capable of giving .. Thanking the men too, those companions side by side these mothers. And thanking the grandmothers, including the ones who in their time of mothering didn't know of these options, honoring them for their support to their daughters that now are mothers and that want to breastfeed their babies. <3 span="">3>
And please, please do not judge, even if you see a mother feeding her child with a bottle, you don't know for what this woman has been through, or if it is her "choice" at all .. but support her with your open heart. After all, the core is about Love-feeding really ..
And please, please do not judge, even if you see a mother feeding her child with a bottle, you don't know for what this woman has been through, or if it is her "choice" at all .. but support her with your open heart. After all, the core is about Love-feeding really ..
Mamantin (Mother-Child) Program
The Mamantin Program (Mother-Child program) aims to provide basic safe tools to pregnant and new mothers to care for themselves and their newborns, together with reclaiming the Celebration of Motherhood especially in rural territories where public health campaigns and strategies have focused to explain motherhood as a stage of risk and birth as a matters of just "surviving". We believe birth is much more than that, where maternal deaths can be prevented with loving and adequate continuous care thru the woman-mother life cycle. The training of new professional midwives which not adhere to the biomedical model of care is key on making possible this vision.
We are still way behind in accomplishing this given the politics in Peru around birth and independent midwifery which can sustain the midwifery model of care - with an intercultural approach as needed in the Andes where Andean midwifery has been part and is still, at a lesser or greater degree, part of the embodied wisdom Andean women have in Peru. More than 90% of birth assistance in Peru is given by a doctor (60.2%) or an obstetra (a professional biomedical midwife) (28%) both trained in the biomedical model of care, with a high rate of unnecessary interventionism and obstetric violence to the women they serve, deemed as "uneducated" by the medical system. There are no midwifery education training centers which adhere to the more respectful and appropriate midwifery model for low-risk births (the majority) so our dream is that aspiring Peruvian midwives can receive this training abroad and then come back to Peru to assist births in this loving & safe model of care. With enthusiast Peruvian midwives properly trained in the midwifery model of care, the next step of dreaming a local intercultural midwifery training center may be possible.
Thus, Hampi Warmi's strategy for this new program is to: 1) keep providing education on maternal and newborn health, with a woman-centered and intercultural approach; 2) keep providing education around reproductive & cultural rights around birth; 3) promoting and revitalizing Andean midwifery wisdom from within rural communities - with the backing of the validity of the midwifery model of care and its safety; 4) supporting and promoting independent birth centers initiatives in Peru; 5) promoting the gestating of independent Peruvian professional midwives (parteras profesionales) in the country and dreaming the best avenues to receiving this training in independent midwifery schools abroad (South America/ North America); and 6) promoting the Remembering of the Celebration of Motherhood, especially in Andean rural communities, through the revitalization of Ceremony & Ritual for new mothers and the collective co-creation of "new" rituals and other ways of motherly celebration (eg photography community project, birth storytelling sacred circles).
A transversal strategy is to broaden the awareness of the diversity of ways of mothering with love and visibilizing these love-mothering manifestations and honor them (eg mothers with low milk supply who feed their babies through breastfeeding and by supplementing).
A transversal strategy is to broaden the awareness of the diversity of ways of mothering with love and visibilizing these love-mothering manifestations and honor them (eg mothers with low milk supply who feed their babies through breastfeeding and by supplementing).
Parto Vertical con Adecuaci贸n Cultural en el Centro de Salud - Huancavelica Peru - Proyecto: avances & limitaciones

"Parto Vertical con Adecuaci贸n Vertical"
This Program recently (2015) won a WHO prize for best "maternal good practices" project in America
Although there are some advances regarding cultural respect and obstetric violence - this last so common in public health centers in rural areas in Peru - there are still some important limitations in the delivery of care regarding a safe and woman-baby centered approach to birth. Many basic birth practices still don't adhere to the midwifery model care. For example, in this "Vertical Births with Cultural Adaptation" (still 10% of all institutionalized births in the country) after the birth of the baby, the umbilical cord is immediately cut and after that the baby is unemotionally taken away for checking his weight and height in the same room, without having those crucial first moments of contact with her own mother.
Hampi Warmi Educators Network (Red de Educadoras Hampi Warmi) - You Can Become One!
This year 2016, in January, we started Hampi Warmi Educators Training Program, extending the vision of Hampi Warmi's woman-centered and intercultural education & provision of reproductive health. This program aims to have a community of committed health-care workers, women's health educators, social workers, and women in general interested in sharing with/ educating Peruvian girls and women particularly in rural areas - and with women worldwide. Thus, we started the "Hampi Warmi Educators Network" with our first-graduate, Derlly Baldera, Peruvian obstetra (professional biomedical midwife), from rural Lambayeque (Northern Coast-Andes) who sought our Menstrual Health Educator Training for Teens. After completing the 4 modules, with assigments in between (including own personal work as revising one's own menstrual herstory), she now provides this education to rural girls of Cachinche, Ferre帽afe, in Lambayeque, from the platform of the Ministry of Health.
If you feel the call, please email us at cynthiaingar@gmail.com to become a Hampi Warmi Educator and share our woman wisdom to girls and women, wherever you are based, as we also provide an online training, with the same depth and richness. We now provide the "Menstrual Health and Sexual Education Program for Teens" and the "Menstrual Consciousness Program for Women" in this online format. Personal classes are given via Skype with sharing of educational documents & materials and email exchange for personal assignments.
* Note: Education fees (Hampi Warmi Institute certificate included) help support Hampi Warmi's free programs serving Andean girls & women of Peru since 2008.
